Existing user Just click login.Beginning May 1, two walls of the Jewish Museum s lobby will be filled with over 30 new portraits by the London-based painter Chantal Joffe. This body of work explores Jewish women of the twentieth century, focusing on those who made major contributions to art, literature, philosophy, and politics - including Diane Arbus, Nancy Spero, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Susan Sontag, and Hannah Aren yeezy dt. Portraits of these women and others will be hung salon-style across two walls of the lobby. The portraits are not exact depictions, but are charged with the artist s technical, conceptual, and emotional responses. Joffe conducted months of research to gather information and generate personal connections to each subject. Embracing this Mestizo mix, Chacon views his paintings as a coming together of the masses, for a festival or a protest, where individual elements co owala mbine to develop air force a strong visual synergy. Each oval or drip is in fact an individual, created separately through building up acrylic on a plastic surface; the shapes are then peeled off and collaged to the canvas. This process brings yet another facet of Mestizo to the work-the elements are literal migrants, created elsewhere and transplanted into a new paradigm.The title Bacanales, references both Colombian street vernacular--bacano is an adjective implying something is optimal, beautiful |
