I think we have to take care of some of the self-inflicted errors, Virginia coach Amaka Agugua-Hamilton said.Florida State 17-4, 6-2 ACC led 38-37 at the half, but Virginia switched to a zone defense that shut down the Seminoles inside scoring game, and Florida State went cold from the field, making just three of 17 field goal attempts during the period, including a stretch of 12 consecutive misses over a six-minute span.UVA took advantage of Florida States poor shooting to go on a 17-1 run and led 60-47 before FSUs OMariah Gordons three-point shot with nine seconds left in the quarter. After Camryn Taylor made a layup to put the Cavaliers up 62-50, UVA did not score again for six m stanley cup inutes, allowing the Seminoles to reel off 18 unanswered points.A pair of free throws by McKenna Dale closed the gap to 68-64 with 3:24 to play, but six straight points by FSU senior guard Sara Bejedi put the game out of reach over the next two minutes. stanley website UVA finished the contest making just one of 14 shots from the field, which came when Taylor grabbed an offensive rebound and scored in close with just 22 seconds left to play. The game had a long delay prior to Dales free throws when Sam Brunelle was tang Faiz Richmond Flying Squirrels fall to Altoona, 5-3
Thats how Im describing the budget-wrangling in Richmond that will effectively reduce state spending on K-12 education in Virginia. The moves 鈥?forced by Gov. Bob McDonnells push on funding for the Virginia Retirement System for public-sector employees 鈥?are forcing the hands of local decision-makers. Local government, of course, is where the rubber hits the road. For all the talk of cuts in Washington and Richmond, when cuts are made at City Hall or the County Government Center, its not a budget bottom line being cut, but people and services. And in public schools, when youre talking about cuts to people and stanley us services, youre talking teachers and students. So heres what happens: We let legislators and a governor in Richmond put out press releases about how they held the line on taxes and spending, a stanley cup nd we force local town and city councils and boards of supervisors to raise them to meet the funding gap, or those same locally elected leaders decide they cant raise taxes to meet the gap and in the process we force the hands of school boards to cut classroom teaching positions, which account for the bulk of spending on schools. Now, how likely is any locally elected council or board of supervisors member to support a tax increase, right Not going to happen, not on a wide scale, anyway. So take that one off the table. Which leaves stanley us us with 鈥?fewer teachers, bigger class sizes, less opportunities for one-on-one interaction to help struggling students 鈥ids are becoming commodities now. |
