To showcase聽Virginia Cooperative Extensions rich history of advancing the well-being of all Virginians since 1914, an聽interactive timeline聽was created to help visualize the many contributions of the 1862 and 1890 land-grant institutions.Funded by an聽Institute for Critical Technology and Applied Sciences聽diversity grant, the timeline serves as an inclusive tool that community members and students alike can use to visualize the contributions of Virginia Tech and Virginia State University withi stanley italia n a historical context.The timeline was primarily organized by a team of undergraduate and graduate stanley thermobecher students in spring 2021 for the cross-institutional course at Virginia Tech and Virginia State University, Introduction to Cooperative Extension, taught by Karen Vines, an assistant professor in the Department of Agricultural Leadership and Education. This is an important tool that documents Virginia Cooper stanley france ative Extensions rich history of helping communities thrive, Vines said. By including students in this project, they were able to learn the history of how the land-grant universities in the state are engrained in every community across the commonwealth. Jacob Hodges, a senior at the time from Catawba, Virginia, and Jama Coartney, a graduate teaching assistant in the Department of Agricultural Leadership and Education, led the team. Laura Dainton, the 2021 Extension intern, assisted and provided the ADA compliant version. An Olympic gold medalist, NFL star, and former contestants on Top Chef and Ninja聽Warrior TV shows are part of a distinguished judging panel charged with selecting semi-finalists for the聽DMV Take Action Against Distraction License Plate Design Contest. Also participating are two-time Olympic gold medalist Tom Dolan, Ninja Warrior聽contestant Robert Hoover, Top Chef contestant Joy Crump, long-time William and Mary football coach聽Jimmye Laycock, as well as journalists, artists, safety advocates, and law enforcement from across the聽state.All of the judges are respected members and leaders in their communities and offer a wealth of聽knowledge from a variety of fields, such as highway safety, education, art, athletics, media and聽journalism, philanthropy, and law enforcement. On February 20, the judges eight finalists will be announced. Those finalists will go on to a statewide聽online public vote that will run from February 20 to March 20. The grand prize winner will be announced in聽April 2018 and take home a cash prize.
