Former Mexican President Luis Echeverria Alvarez has died at the age of 100. This was announced by the head of state Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on his Twitter account.
According to him, the politician died on the night of Saturday, July 9, at his home in Cuernavaca. "On behalf of the Government of Mexico, I express my deep condolences to the family and friends of Luis Echeverria Alvarez, President of Mexico for a six—year term from 1970 to 1976," Lopez Obrador wrote.
The Government of Luis Echeverria Alvarez has carried out a number of socio-economic measures of a reformist nature. In foreign policy, it adhered to the principle of peaceful coexistence of states with different social systems, advocated equal business cooperation between them.
The former president is remembered for his struggle with rock music. In 1971, after the 300-thousandth festival, where musicians criticized the government, the politician forbade broadcasting rock on the radio and holding concerts in clubs and on large stages. When he left his post, the bans were lifted.
Earlier it was reported that the former president of Angola Eduardo Dos Santos, who ruled the country for almost four decades, died in Spain after a long illness. The politician died at 11:10 Spanish time in a clinic in Barcelona, he was 79 years old. Details of the death are not published.
